Shiny Bounsweet: The Complete Guide to This Rare Pokémon Variant

You can catch a shiny Bounsweet in Pokémon GO, and you can hunt one in Scarlet and Violet too. If a page told you the GO version doesn't exist, check when it was written. Those posts predate May 19, 2024, when Shiny Bounsweet made its debut during Community Day.

The two games ask for different things, so this guide splits them. GO is about timing and luck. The mainline games are about choosing which odds you can afford.

Shiny Bounsweet in Pokémon GO

The shiny debuted at the Bounsweet Community Day on Sunday, May 19, 2024, from 2 to 5 p.m. local time. Niantic said Bounsweet would appear more frequently in the wild with a chance of a shiny, and Steenee and Tsareena shinies arrived the same day.

You can spot it by the crown. The shiny forms have purple leaf-like hair where the originals have green, which makes it look like a grape that got ahead of itself.

Niantic doesn't publish shiny rates, so every number here is outside tracking. PokeXperience counts real encounters and lists Bounsweet at roughly 1 in 510 normally, close to its figure of about 1 in 512 for GO's base rate.

The same page shows an all-time rate near 1 in 377. That's better than the normal rate, presumably because event encounters get counted too. For Community Day itself, one outlet estimated about 1 in 25. Treat that as a ballpark.

Even so, the gap between 1 in 510 and 1 in 25 tells you the whole strategy. Don't grind Bounsweet on an ordinary day. Wait for an event that lists it with the shiny icon, then spend your time there.

Those shiny Bounsweet odds also apply outside the three hours. Beating the four star Steenee bonus raids boosted Bounsweet spawns near the raid for 30 minutes, and those Bounsweet had the same shiny chance as the ones during the main event. Field Research tasks that day gave encounters with the shiny chance as well.

Away from events, players have found shiny Bounsweet in the wild, from research and from photobombs. You can also move one to Pokémon HOME.

How to get shiny Bounsweet in Scarlet and Violet

Bounsweet lives in Paldea, entry 81 in the Scarlet and Violet Pokédex. Its entry says it dangles from tree branches, so hunting it is a bit like orchard work.

The base shiny rate is 1 in 4,096. The Shiny Charm raises it to 1 in 1,365, and you get the Charm from Jacq at the Academy after completing the Pokédex.

A Sparkling Power Level 3 sandwich brings it to 1 in 1,024. Clearing 60 or more of one species in a mass outbreak also lands at 1 in 1,365.

These stack. With the Charm, a Level 3 sandwich and a 60 plus outbreak running at once, Prima Games lists the odds at 1 in 512. That's the best you can do on wild Bounsweet.

The expensive part is the sandwich. Sparkling Power Level 3 needs two Herba Mystica, which means winning lots of 5 star or higher Tera Raids first. Players also use a picnic to purge the field of outbreak spawns once they've hit the 30 or 60 count, which saves wandering around for stragglers.

Mass outbreaks show up as an icon on the map. Follow it, then keep clearing the same species until the count passes 30, then 60. Each threshold adds shiny rolls, and the sandwich should already be active when you start, because Sparkling Power increases shiny encounters for 30 minutes.

Some quick math, which is mine and not from any guide. At 1 in 512, you have about a 63% chance of seeing at least one shiny after 512 encounters. To reach roughly 90%, you need around 1,180. So a hunt that takes twice the odds number isn't bad luck, just arithmetic.

Why Bounsweet is awkward to breed

Breeding is the other route, and it has a quirk here. The whole Bounsweet line is female only. Its single egg group is Grass, so it can pair with a male Grass group Pokémon or with Ditto.

For the Masuda method, the two parents have to come from games set to different languages. The odds with the method are 1 in 683, or 1 in 512 once you add the Shiny Charm. Since Bounsweet can't supply a male, your foreign parent is nearly always a Ditto from a game in another language, which you can get by trade.

Compare that with the outbreak route. The Masuda route ends at the same 1 in 512, but it needs no Herba Mystica and no Tera Raid grinding. It needs a foreign Ditto and a lot of egg hatching.

Eggs hatch by steps, so you can walk or ride around Paldea while the odds work for you. That's less exciting than an outbreak, but it's also less stressful.

My take: if you own a foreign Ditto already, breed. If you don't, getting one in a trade is usually less work than farming Herba Mystica.

Older games, briefly

For Sun and Moon, one hunting guide recommends running an SOS chain in the Lush Jungle. For Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the same guide points to breeding with an overseas Ditto. Pick these only if that's the game you have.

What to do first

If you have Scarlet or Violet, check the language of your Ditto before anything else. A Ditto from your own language won't trigger the bonus. If it matches, trade for a different one and start a picnic.

If GO is all you've got, open the event page and look for Bounsweet with the shiny icon. Skip it otherwise.
