Early Life: From Donegal to Laurel Canyon
Brought up in Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland, the son of his mother, Kathleen Hutton, relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, during childhood. Financial constraints were part of Hutton’s formative years: his mother ran a Victorian boarding house, and the young Danny answered the public phone.
His family later relocated west. They ended up in Hollywood, California, where Hutton went to a Catholic school. This would put Hutton in the midst of the LA 60’s musical scene at its height.
Before Three Dog Night became a band, Hutton was busy working. He had worked as a stock boy for Disney/Buena Vista records, done voice work for cartoons, and recorded singles for MGM and Hanna-Barbera Records in the mid 1960s. He even auditioned for the Monkees but wasn’t accepted – a near miss which would in retrospect give him more freedom to do great things.
How Three Dog Night Came Together
The idea of having a band made up of three vocal leads occurred to Hutton back in 1967. Hutton decided to bring Cory Wells onboard and together they brought in Chuck Negron.

Part of the band's edge was its willingness to record outside songwriters. The band Three Dog Night helped bring attention to the music of Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and Laura Nyro.
